- History:
- This station
dates back to an original construction permit granted to Kerry Rich
in the summer of 1991 for a new station licensed to Attalla on 102.9
MHz. The class A facility's transmitter site was located atop
Chandler Mountain, near the community of Steele. The original
grant was for 1.1 kW at 702 feet HAAT (Height Above Average
Terrain), with the call sign WKXX. That call sign has history
in the nearby Birmingham market, as it was used for many years on
one of the station's two Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) stations,
"Kicks 106". When this station signed on in late 1991, it
launched with a CHR music format as "Kicks 102.9". The license
was transferred from Kerry Rich to Alexandra Victoria Broadcasting
Company in October 1992.
Broadcast Media, LLC acquired the station in January 1998 for
$650,000. They are 50% owned by Sand Mountain Broadcasting, who own
WQSB and WAVU in Albertville. Courington, Inc. owns the other 50%.
Over the years, the format mellowed a bit from CHR to Hot Adult
Contemporary.
In mid-August 2020, the station flipped to Fox Sports Radio as "Fox
Sports Northeast Alabama". The change apparently went
unnoticed by radio observers for several weeks, until it was
reported by Radio
Insight.
The station dropped Fox Sports for Classic Country in January 2023,
positioning itself as "Alabama's Country Classics".
