- History:
- Signed on with
lower power in the late 60's as WFRI by Faulkner Broadcasting.
Had a MOR format, then migrated to oldies and then top 40 in the
70's. In the 80's it was known as "Rock 97" and had a classic
rock format. After an ownership change of this and AM sister
station WAOA (now WTLM), the AM flipped from country to oldies, and
the FM flipped from rock to country. It was at this time the
calls changed to the present WKKR (KicKeR fm). In May 2014,
then-owners Qantum Communications sold their entire cluster to Clear
Channel, including this station.
The station received a construction permit in mid-May 2018 to leave
their old transmitter site off Marvyn Parkways in town, to relocate
to the AM tower behind the studios on Veterans Parkway, northwest of
Opelika. The change comes with a big drop in coverage due to
lower power and lower antenna heights used. The permit that
was issued in mid-May 2018 was cancelled at the licensee's request
in November 2020.
