98.5 started in the
late 60's as WIXO, a great idea just a little ahead of its time -- FM top
40. It was known as "98.5 - A Little Cooler Than Normal". FM penetration
was low and the station operated on a short tower. (Analysis: the operation
was a success but the patient died.) R&B WYLD AM 940 picked up the
facility to use for jazz and alternative black-appeal sounds. Today it
co-owned with WQUE, which skews toward the younger black demographic, while
WYLD fills in with the adult sound.
