Was WCTA-FM, comanion
of WCTA-AM, back in the late 50's, long before FM meant anything. In the
mid-70's, the AM and FM both became WKYD, formatted as country oldies.
In the late 80's, the station went from a short tower in Andalusia to a
tall one about 30 miles south, to compete in the Ft. Walton Beach market.
Even with the new taller tower, the station didn't put a city grade signal
into any urbanized area. The calls became WWSF "The Surf" with a CHR format.
Had several years of dominant Arbitrons until local competition slowed
the momentum. Until recently, the format was 60's and 70's oldies. All-sports
and news calls WTKE (the moniker is "the TicKEt") took effect in spring
1999.
It is the first and
most likely only 100,000 watts FM sports talk station.
