FM History Profile: WQNR
-
History:
-
The station started
off as WACQ, the FM companion to AM 1130 in town. The format was rather
rare: small town top 40 with an emphasis on local Tallasee and Reeltown
school sports. The moniker was Power 99. Later switched to automated top
40 before settling on oldies, still with the "Power 99" name.
-
In 1999, this station
began simulcasting WTGZ-FM in Tuskeegee. For a month the calls were changed
to WQNR. The simulcast met with such sucess that it is still going on,
although the calls have returned to WACQ. The Tiger still identifies itself
as "95.9/104.9", the second frequency being a translator in Montgomery.
-
The station was back
to WQNR and classic rock (with Auburn sports) as of early October 1999.
But, change is constant in radio. They're WQNR again, with the same format,
as of June 2000.
