97.1 dates back to the
50's as WRCM, the FM companion of WJMR 990 AM; as such it is one of the
oldest FMs in the south. In the 70's, it took on the calls WEZB, as a beautiful
music station. In the late 70's, it followed fad and became Disco 97. Once
disco died (two weeks later), 97.1 went top 40 as "B 97". That format still
prevails today, though the station has wavered over towards adult contemporary
at times and experimented in the mid-90's with Howard Stern and other provocative
talk shows.
The station was the
first in the market to carry Howard Stern.
